Canadian Idol

JFK is quite rightly held up as a style icon. The closest Canadian equivalent would have to be Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Prime Minister from 1968 to 1969 and then again from 1980 to 1984.

That's right, two times.

He was irreverent, witty and not afraid to say what he felt. He dated Margot Kidder and Barbara Streisand. He hung out with Fidel Castro and John Lennon. He openly mocked the monarchy, which was a pretty big deal up here at the time. The country was swept up in "Trudeaumania," with teenage girls hysterically screaming and fainting at the sight of him as though he was a rock star.

In other words, nothing like any other Canadian politician, before or since.

Above all, he did a lot of good for our country, championing equal rights, blingualism and Canadian unity.

And hey, he looked pretty stylish too.
